Q: HOW DOES SLEEP EFFECT ME?
A: According to the National Sleep Foundation, more than 50 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder. These disorders significantly affect: Concentration, Attention, & Memory. Those with sleep disorders are more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders like Depression and Anxiety. If you have a sleep disorder, you are at greater risk for High Blood Pressure, Cardiac Arrhythmias, Diabetes, Stroke, and DEATH.

Q: WHY DO I SNORE?
A: Although not all snorers have sleep apnea, it is one of the top symptoms for it! Snoring can be caused by:

  • Sleep Position
  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Alcohol or Drug Consumption
  • Nasal Issues/Problems
  • Your Mouth Anatomy

However, if snoring is accompanied by other sleep apnea symptoms you may want to take a home sleep study to determine if you need a CPAP or BIPAP.

Q: IS SNORING DANGEROUS?
A: Snoring every once in a while is normal and not considered dangerous to your health. However, while snoring every once in awhile is mostly just annoying for your partner, long-term snoring can be a sign of other health issues associated with it. Snoring is caused by an obstruction to your airway, therefore it could be as simple as nasal congestion from a head cold, or something more serious related to irregular sleep patterns effecting your health. It's best to ask your doctor if your or your sleeping partner are concerned about your snoring and they prescripe a home sleep study!

Q: WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF SLEEP APNEA?
A: The Most Common Symptoms Are:

  • Breathing pauses during sleep (witnessed by someone else)
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Morning headaches
  • Sore throat upon awakening
  • Restless sleep
  • Gasping or choking at night
  • High blood pressure
  • Chest pain at night

Q: WHY CAN'T I FALL ASLEEP?
A: Insomnia can be caused by many different issues, such as depression, anxiety, poor sleep habits, or certain medications. Insomnia and Sleep Apnea are the two most common sleep disorders in America and there is strong evidence indicating corelation between the two! An easy example of how sleep apnea can lead to insomnia is your brain actively inhibiting one’s ability to fall asleep so as to avoid experiencing apneas (something blocking your airway) while asleep. The brain registers the life-threatening nature of apneas and works to prevent them by inducing insomnia. A CPAP device can help get more oxygen to your brain and body, but first you must take a sleep study to determine if you have sleep apnea.

Q: WHY AM I ALWAYS TIRED?
A: There are several reasons for chronic fatigue, but sleep apnea could be the main reason you're always tired and sleepy during the day. Sleep Apnea can occur when your airway becomes obstructed while you're trying to sleep, thus causing your brain and body to receive less air. 

 

Q: WHAT IS THE EPWORTH SLEEPINESS SCALE?
A: The Epworth Sleepiness scale is something sleep doctors, clinicians, and sleep labs use to help field and determine if you qualify for a sleep study and try to measure your daytime sleepiness! The test asks you to rank your sleepiness in a series of provided situations that you would experience, and then those numbers are used to determine if a sleep study may be right for you!
